Definition |
Right verticular dysfunction secondary to pulmonary hypertension resulting from disorders and diseases of the respiratory system. Could be acute cor pulmonate following pulmonary embolism, or chronic cor pulmonate due to diseases of the pulmonary vasculature and parenchyma. |

Prognosis |
Depends upon the underlying cause of cor pulmonale. In COPD the pulmonary artery pressure is the stronger predictor of survival. As a rule, a mean PaP of 20-25mm Hg or more carries or por prognosis. |

General Measures |
Pulmonary rehabilitation programme, as detailed under COPD. |

Advice to Patient |
Maintaining optimum body weight and ensure adequate rest.Stop smoking, avoid polluted areas.Look out for edema, and aggravation of cough, or increased breathlessness, and alert your physician. |

Follow Up |
Depends upon the background causative illness, and severity of heart failure. |

Inadequate Response |
Decisive therapy of aggravating factors like infection, excess salt consumption. |
